In with the Interns: Week Four

In with the Interns is our new segment featuring the 2013 high school interns; this segment will explore what they do, learn and experience this summer. Written by Kate Borger, this segment will also feature original words and artwork from the interns.

Our eight wonderful high school interns had quite an eclectic menu of experiences this week, from tours of our own Tropical Forest India and Center for Sustainable Landscapes to tours of Construction Junction and the East End Food Coop.  At the Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse, they made unique journals with surplus wallpaper samples under the guidance of artists, Katy DeMent and Susan Swarthout.

In an effort to contribute back to the community, the interns gave a presentation to the residents and neighbors of Community Human Services in Oakland, informing them of the air-purifying benefits of common houseplants.  Dozens of philodendron were donated to the CHS by the visiting Phipps interns.  Along with all these activities, the interns assisted Phipps horticulture staff and cooked a splendid vegetarian lunch with Slow Food Pittsburgh chefs, Virginia Phillips and Amy Baer.

Throughout the week, there was much discussion about “green” career paths and possibilities.  We held our annual Green Careers/Brown Bag Lunch in which Phipps horticulture, science education and college intern staff contribute personal stories to the conversation.  One message they all shared: do what you’re passionate about and work will be a joyful part of life.  All in all, another terrific week for our terrific high school interns!
