Patti Burns Prize for Excellence in Environmental Communication Awarded

by Melissa Harding

Congratulations to Woodland Hills High School for being awarded the second annual Patti Burns Prize for Excellence in Environmental Communication! Sophomore Kiley Spitz won the prize for her school through her Fairchild Challenge “Eco-Scientist Profile” entry, in which she chose to write a magazine-style profile about the influential environmentalist, scientist, writer, and local Pittsburgher, Rachel Carson. The $500 prize money will be used by the school to implement an environmental improvement project onsite.

Kiley Spitz accepts the Patti Burns Prize for Excellence in Environmental Communication on behalf of Woodland Hills High School from Molly Steinwald, Phipps Director of Science Education and Research.

Phipps established the Patti Burns Prize for Excellence in Environmental Communication to be awarded annually to competing high schools and graduate students engaged with Phipps’ education and research programs, including the Fairchild Challenge. The Prize is made possible through the generosity of Charles C. Cohen, chairman of the law firm Cohen & Grigsby and a visiting professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, in honor of his late wife, Pittsburgh television icon, humanitarian, and lover of nature, Patti Burns.
